Often times these classes are presented in conjunction with her multi-media show called "Marni Nixon: the Voice of Hollywood".

Nixon's master classes are a revelation! They are fun and informative, not only for the student (for whom it is designed), but for the auditors besides. She works, hands-on, with each individual singer in whatever repertoire is determined and moves them to a new place of expression, technique or awareness.

Usually, the current subject of much interest in colleges and Universities and repertory theater companies is the classically trained singer moving into Musical theater repertoire. The differences in styles of singing and perception. The need for thorough, specific and insightful acting. The role of the flexible and responsive body.

There are always topics open for discussion...repertoire, style, the audition processes, presentation, representation, etc. Each singer comes away with more insight and awareness of himself and his particular talent and growth process. It can be considered "a happening". All auditors participants and the audience at large comes away invigorated and empowered.

Usually there is 15 or 20 minutes spent on each student with a description before and after the class and room for questions and answers of any sort. Sometimes we do class work on breathing, body, movement and mechanical work...the craft of singing, diction, style and tone. Then there's interpretive help and how to be involved in the text and make it come through the most diffficult vocal number....Audition preparation and emeanor and appearance...clasical and musical theater.

Miss Nixon works best with a one-on-one experiential process while other participants and auditors are looking on. Then there is explanation and clarification.

Background:
Miss Nixon has served as assistant to Michel Singher at the Music Academy of the West in California, in the 70's and has served as the Head of the Voice Department at California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California, from it's inception in 1970 to 1972 until her move to sing with the Opera Company in Seattle, Washington.

In the past few years, recent master classes have taken place at Peabody Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes, School of Music; Puget Sound Community College with St. Martin's College and Evergreen College in Tacoma Washington, Pacific Lutheran College; Marymount College, Maryland; USC; California; Many NATS (National Association of Singing) organizations and Conventions throughout the country and Canada; UC Irvine; North Texas University, Lubbock, Texas; SMU, Dallas; Sigma Alpha Iota, (honorary national Women's Music Fraternity) Seattle, Washington: Black Box Opera, Seattle, Washington: Ohio State University, Columbus and also Youngstown, Ohio: Duquesne University, Columbus, Ohio; Gloria Musicae Chorale, Sarasota Florida; Brigham Young: Logen, Utah; Sembrich Museum, Lake George, NY; Catholic University, Maryland; Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle, Washington, Shenandoah in Virginia; Emerson College, Boston; Yale University, New Haven Ct.; Boston Conservatory, Boston, Mass., Professional Women singers, Asso (NYC) and many others.

Longer Artistic Residencies have included University of Nevada in Las Vegas (sponsored by the Drama Department AND the Music Department); Muhlenberg College, Pennsylvania; Guest coach and acting teacher with the Harrower Opera Workshop, Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia.

Miss Nixon will be in residency at Jones Community Junior College, Ellisville, Mississippi in March, 2007 coaching the musical Anything Goes.

Miss Nixon was the dialect coach for the Grammy-Award winning recording on Virgin Records of Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah" with Sam Ramey, Cheryl Studer and Jerry Hadley, Kent Nagano conducting the Opera Company of Lille, France.

Miss Nixon just received the coveted VERA award from the Voice Foundation in Philadelphia for outstanding work in voice research and education.
